Many hundreds of thousands of members in 78 countries belong to the World Union of German Shepherd Dog Associations. In GMany dog owners are looking for a leisure activity that is fun for humans and animals alike, allows sufficient exercise and ideally strengthens the bond between the dog and its owner. The Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (German Shepherd Dog Association) offers a wide range of opportunities for this - for club members and non members alike: from puppy play lessons, dog training and varied dog sports to the completion of stately examinations, there is something for every team.

A strong team - dog and dog handler

Dogs - especially the German Shepherd - need regular physical and mental exercise to stay healthy and fit. Above all, however, shepherds who are sufficiently challenged and encouraged are more balanced, obedient and satisfied in their nature. In order to achieve this, the dog handler is needed - because only if the necessary trust is present and the communication between man and dog functions perfectly, the team can face the different disciplines.

If dog and dog handler are a well-rehearsed team, they can prove themselves on local, state and national level and also internationally at competitions and championships: Not only the qualification of the dog counts here - also his owner has to prove his skills in dog sports!

Socialization through play and fun

The dog, just like the human being, has a social nature. As a pack animal, it seeks contact with its mother dog, its siblings and conspecifics from birth on. If the puppy is denied this contact, its social spirit "withers away" and it runs the risk of becoming a loner. Often these dogs, out of their insecurity, are aggressive or extremely afraid of other dogs of the same species.

Regular contact with dogs of the same age, for example in a puppy school or - as we call it - "puppy play time", can counteract this and give the puppy security in dealing with other dogs.

Puppy playtime means that the dogs here learn from an early age to meet other dogs of the same species, to play with them and to communicate with them - in a social way. Even the mostly still inexperienced dog owners learn in the puppy play time the appropriate handling of their puppy and the most important principles of dog training. In order to strengthen the social bond between humans and (his) animal, play units with the dog owners take place regularly at the puppy meeting.

Because: Dogs who have confidence in themselves, their owner and their environment will become loyal/reliable partners for life!

Adventure playground Welpentreff

"Every beginning is fun" is the motto of the puppy play lessons of the SV local groups. Here all puppies from the eleventh week of life and, for safety reasons only with full vaccination, are welcome. The training ground of the local group is turned into an "adventure playground" for the puppy meeting every week: Here, once a week, the young dogs can playfully learn how to interact with their peers, get to know various environmental stimuli and, under safe supervision, gain valuable experience for a healthy social development. With the 20th week of life the puppy enters the young dog age and may leave the puppy playtime.ermany alone, there are currently about 250,000 purebred German Shepherd dogs with SV papers. Year after year about 10,000 puppies are registered in the German stud book.

Breeding requirements

Breeding is a responsible and beautiful task in which one can purposefully participate in the further development of a dog breed. Besides idealism and love for the animal, shepherd dog breeding requires above all extensive expertise, clear objectives and experience. A lot of space for a kennel and an understanding neighbourhood are further basic requirements. Besides the training of the breeding animals and the presentation at breeding shows, especially the little puppies have to be constantly cared for and looked after.

Also the financial side of breeding must be considered. This includes, for example, the costs for the facility, the food, the veterinarian and all those expenses that are connected with the admission of the dog for breeding - i.e.: training, HD, ED and DNA procedures, tests, breeding shows, licensing, travel to the stud dog and the stud fee.

Planning leads to the goal: the right choice of partner

A prerequisite for successful breeding is the quality of the parent animals and their ancestors. Then the choice of a suitable male for the bitch depends on the merits (and also the faults) of the breeding partners. Further criteria: Degree of relationship, type, line, hair type, quality of any existing offspring and finally also the willingness to breed the intended dog. It is advisable to consult with experienced breeders and with the breed wardens of the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV) e.V.

Ensuring the quality of the breed

If two dogs are brought together for breeding purposes, the bitch always goes to the male dog. Before that, the mating fee is agreed in writing with the owner. Important: The bitch must be at least 20 months old before she is mated for the first time. The SV has prescribed in its breeding regulations the frequency of mating acts per male dog. Bitches may be mated up to 90 times, of which a maximum of 60 in Germany. This regulation of the SV serves the quality of the breed. Without an adequate rest period between mating, the fertilization rate will decrease.
